How to Choose the Right Cat Post

Cats grow a sheath of skin over their claws which they need to shed regularly, this is why cats, both wild and domestic, scratch.

Because of this necessity to scratch, your cat will often find the nearest rough service and scratch away, usually to the detriment of your wallpaper or furniture.

To stop your cat scratching your belongings you need to provide an acceptable alternative. Our cat scratching posts use sisal rope. This rope is perfect for scratching and best of all is safe, we have found other manufactures to use poor materials which can pull cat claws out and is poisonous in some cases.

What length post should I go for?

When choosing a cat scratching post make sure you get one long enough for your cat to stretch out fully. Our 72cm high posts are usually long enough for the average cat but if you have an especially large cat, you’ll need bigger still. Our 60cm high posts are only sufficient for kittens.

What about platforms?

If your cat prefers to view their world from a high vantage point, consider a platform.

Choosing the correct platform is related to the size of your cat and whether the cat prefers to sit up or lay down. Most of our platforms are 31cm or 36cm square. 31cm is usually fine for a cat that sits a lot, whilst a 36cm platform is better for laying. A 41cm platform is required for a maine coon that sits, bigger still is required if they like to lay down (refer to our maine coon pagodas in the ’special posts’ section). If you need extra advice on this, feel free to contact me anytime, we can also discuss variations and bespoke designs if you so desire.

What should I do if I have lots of cats?

Multi Cat households have 2 options

A) Build up a small stock of posts to put all around the home or…

B) Go for a larger item with more posting and levels such as our Pagoda’s or Towers(on the ’special posts’ page).

Either option works well. But the second is best where space is limited.

You may also consider our Twin and Triple Posts where budget may be an issue (see under ’special posts’).

What about strength, sturdiness and stability?

Your cat is not likely to continue using a post if it topples every time it scratches.

  • All our posts are made of timber, no cardboard! This is both great for the cat and you because it won’t topple and it will last for many years to come.
  • All posts come with heavy bases to stop them topling, in bigger posts we make the bases broader and thicker.
  • Platforms and decks are normally secured with metal brackets. This will keep your feline friends safe.

If you’re after even more strength, for a little more money we offer a Chunky Boy upgrade which gives you a 3 by 3 inch post and a thicker sisal rope. When ordering simply choose the ‘Chunky Boy’ version, this upgrade has not yet been made available for all the posts on the site but can be easily arranged if you contact us using the link in the menu bar above.
